Lunch Walk: Walking together instead of sitting

The simplest way to bring movement systematically into BGM: a fixed lunch walk – low-threshold, easy to document, and an ideal entry point into the movement domain.

Why a simple midday round moves more than a fitness offer Most BGF offers fail at the hurdle just before them: signing up, changing clothes, overcoming reluctance. The lunch walk has none of these hurdles. Anyone who wants to can join – spontaneously today, again tomorrow. It's exactly this casualness that makes it so robust: there's nothing to miss and nothing to get wrong. Long sitting stretches are the silent strain factor of office life, and half an hour of movement at midday interrupts them right when the afternoon slump would otherwise begin.

The real effect happens while talking, not while walking People who walk side by side instead of sitting across from each other talk differently. Departments that otherwise only email each other clarify in ten minutes on the walk what would have taken half an hour in a meeting. Here, movement is the occasion, connection is the result. Many companies report that informal exchange is the reason the round survives – not the step counter.

How a walk becomes a fixed habit Reliability is what matters: a fixed weekday, a fixed time, the same route. At the start, a small group that simply sets off is enough – no poster, no campaign. Pairing the round with a small step-count challenge creates visibility without pressure. And when a manager joins in themselves, it sends the strongest signal of all: this half hour is allowed.

How to put it in place

  1. 1
Set a fixed weekday and time (e.g. Wednesday 12:15 PM)
  2. 2
Determine a meeting point (e.g. main entrance)
  3. 3
Invite the team by email — use the template
  4. 4
Lead the first round yourself, then rotate hosts
  5. 5
After 6 weeks: gather feedback and establish permanently if appropriate
